Galaxy black hole6/2/2023 ![]() Once you arrive at the edge of a black hole, gravity takes over. But its location in the same galaxy as Earth meant the team would have to look through pollution caused by stars and dust to image it, meaning there would be more data to filter out when processing the image. In the simulation, the team witnessed the birth of an ultramassive black hole following the merger of the three galaxies. Though not the only black hole in our galaxy, it is the black hole that appears largest from Earth. “This similarity reveals to us a key aspect of black holes no matter their size or the environment they live in. Using a high-resolution cosmological simulation called ASTRID, the team modeled the evolution of the universe as it appeared about 11 billion years ago. More measurements of black hole masses in nearby galaxies, over the widest possible range of host galaxy types and velocity dispersions, are needed in order to. “If Sagittarius A* were the size of a doughnut, M87* would be the size of the Allianz Arena, the Munich football stadium just a few kilometers from where we are today,” Sara Issaoun, NASA Einstein fellow at the Harvard & Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics, told a press conference at the European Southern Observatory in Germany. The team compared capturing it to “trying to take a clear picture of a puppy quickly chasing its tail.” To make the black hole visible, they developed sophisticated new tools to account for the gas movement. This is because the gas surrounding Sagittarius A* completes an orbit in just minutes compared with days to weeks for the gas orbiting the much larger M87*, causing the brightness and pattern of the gas to change rapidly. Various astronomers have speculated that large volumes of interstellar gas collect and collapse into supermassive black holes at the centres of quasars and galaxies. ![]() ![]() It has a mass equal to about 4 million suns and would fit inside a very large ball that could hold a few million Earths. The supermassive black hole at the center of the Milky Way galaxy is called Sagittarius A. A galaxy called J2157 spotted around 12. Despite being much closer to us, Sagittarius A* was significantly more difficult to capture than M87*. The supermassive black hole imaged by the EHT is located in the center of the elliptical galaxy M87, located about 55 million light years from Earth. Scientists have found proof that every large galaxy contains a supermassive black hole at its center. These ultramassive black holes have masses over 10 billion Suns, and theyre not just theoretical.
